Twitter got me

I was checking twitter before going out to dinner last night and saw that several respected blogs were reporting that Royals pitcher Zack Greinke was traded to the Phillies. The news was shocking. The reported stated that Ross Glode, Domonic Brown, and pitcher Antonio Bastardo were heading to Kansas City.

After hearing the news, I got on the phone and called or texted several other baseball fans about the issue and none of them had heard anything about it, which was weird because both friends have a good idea of what is going on. After a couple of minutes, I checked twitter again and people started posting it was all a hoax and the Phillies were not involved in anything involving the Royals.

People talk about twitter being the future of journalism but sometimes even the future of something can get a person in trouble. While twitter is great it will cause some issues and this situation shows it.

The Coaching Wheel is about to get out of control

The Bowl Season is only a couple of days from starting and the coaching carousel is getting ready to really spin out of control. With openings at two of the biggest jobs in Florida, at Miami and Florida; Pittsburgh, and a possible opening at Michigan this could be one of the busiest carousel in sometime.

Miami has talked to Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini and if both parties agree that it could work out that would open up the Nebraska. The Husker job might be more attractive because they will be members of the Big Ten Conference next season.

The Florida job is one of the most high profile jobs in the country and could trigger a bunch of other openings. What happens if the Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops takes the job, the Oklahoma job would open up, which would set off another round of craziness.

In addition to all of the other high profile jobs out that there, one under rated job is available, the heading coaching positions at Pitt. While its not that greatest job in all of the world, its a job that a coach can really win at. Pitt offers a big recruiting base in its own city as well as the chance to go into New Jersey and get kids.

Once one of these jobs gets filled then the fun it going to start. I have this feeling that this years coaching carousel might be more interesting then the bowl season.

Never Saw This Coming

At about 2:30 this afternoon, I was thinking that I was going to write about Peyton Hillis and his quest to become the first white running back since the Patriots Craig James to break the 1,000 yard mark, but after a quick check of twitter that all changed.

Jayson Werth signed with the Washington Nationals, the twitter post said. I could not believe it Werth signing with my Washington Nationals. Its hard to believe still. I for one still don't get it. The Nationals gave Werth seven years and $126 million. Those a franchise player type numbers, but here is my question, is Werth a franchise player. I tend to say no. With the Phillies, Werth was surrounded with star players from Howard to Utley to Rollins. So the offensive expectations where not as high as other members of the lineup. Werth has never been a 100 RBI player, the closest he came was in 2009 when he had 99. Now with the Nationals he is going to be counted on to provide power to a very limited offense. One of the few positives of this deals is that the Nats can keep their first round draft pick, traditionally teams are given a the first round pick of the team that signs a player. Since the Nats is a top 10 its protected.

While I'm happy the Nationals have spent some money  in free agency, I wish that they would have have taken that money and spent it in other areas. One thing that I would have loved to seen the National do was resign Adam Dunn and try to get AJ Burnett from the Yankees. That would have improved the team and also cost about the same. Sometime make a big splash is not the way to improve your team and with the Nationals that might be the case.

Under Armour's Big Day

For the last couple of years Nike and Adidas have been the kings of college football apparel, but on Saturday afternoon another company will have their coming out party before a national TV audience. South Carolina will meet Auburn in the SEC Title Game, with the winner moving on to a BCS Bowl game, but the game means a little more to Under Armour.

Both South Carolina and Auburn jumped on the Under Armour bandwagon a couple of years ago and it appears to be paying off.  For the last couple of years, Under Armour has been making waves in the college football apparel industry but Saturday marks the first time that two Under Armour wearing teams will be meeting on this type of national stage. 

In 2009, Under Armour notched its first really big win when Utah beat Nike wearing Alabama in the Sugar Bowl. The brand could continue to grow if Auburn won and gave Under Armour their first BCS National Title Game appearance. 

This type of exposure will do nothing but sell a ton of jersey and other for both schools and Under Armour. The game should be a money making experience for all involved.

The future is now for some

During the course of the long holiday weekend I have been able to watch a couple of different soccer games and came away impressed by a pair of young midfielders.

On Wednesday, I watched United play Rangers in the Champions League and came away very impressed with Rangers six foot two inch 19 year old midfielder Kyle Hutton. Despite being the youngest player on the field, he played with a calmness that is shown only by older players. The Scottish midfielder is going to continue to grow and has the potential to be one of the best midfielders around.

Then on Saturday, I watched the Arsenal Aston Villa game and loved what I saw from Ciaran Clark (picture above) and also came away impressed. During the game Clark scored Villa only two goals in the 4-2 loss. Clark, who stands six foot two inches tall, is a commanding presence in the middle of the field to go along with the smallish Barry Bannan. The duo is going to team up for the next couple of years to give Villains face something to cheer about. Clark has played at various levels for England but has recently committed to play for Ireland at senior level. Clark has all of the tools to be a great box to box midfielder in the Premier League.

Both Clark and Hutton are tall figures and show that playing midfield is no longer a small man's game.

Really ABC

So there is a game between two Top 15 teams and a match up between two unranked teams, guess which game I got on ABC. So instead of Oklahoma State Oklahoma game I have USC Notre Dame, but no problem. Thank god for XBox live, I'm able to watch the Cowboys and Sooners on ESPN3. It has saved the night.

Time For a Change

So the home slate of games is now over and all that Rutgers has left is a visit to Morgantown in what has been a surprising dissappointing season. Now its time to look at a head and think of ways to improve this struggling offense. For the most part the defense has not been a problem, except for the last two game. The defense has kept the team in most of the games this year. But one thing is clear changes need to made on the offense and those changes might also include a total change in the offensive philopshy of the offense.

For starters the co-offensive coordinator tandem of Kirk Ciarrocca and Kyle Flood need to be let go and overall the only person that I would keep would be recievers coach PJ Fleck. Fleck is a young coach and has done a good job with Harrison, Sanu and Deering. Instead of being a team that prides itself on running the football and playing defense, its time for head coach Greg Schiano to turn over a new leaf and make drastic changes to the offense.

With the skill position that this team has Schiano should look to move away from the running game and to a more uptempo passing game, maybe someone from that Mike Leech coaching. While coaches like Texas Tech offensive Coordinator Neil Harris are not going to look at the job, Schiano should look at someone similar to that, a young energetic coach with personality.

One guy who caught my eye was Bowling Green offensive coordinator and quarterback coach Warren Ruggerio.In 2009, Falcon offense he led a unit that ranked first in the MAC and sixth nationally in passing yards per game (316.2). Standout quarterback Tyler Sheehan finished the year completing 373 of 575 passes for 4,051 yards and 27 touchdowns, all career-bests under the guidance of Ruggiero. In fact, his 4,051 passing yards were only the second time in BGSU's 90-year history that a Falcon quarterback had surpassed the 4,000 yard plateau. In addition to working at Bowling Green, Ruggerio also helped tutor Tampa Bay Bucs quarterback Josh Freeman while he was at Kansas State. This year has not been the best for Bowling Green but that is not been because of Ruggerio but rather rather a lack of talent. While Ruggerio might not be the sexist pick for the job, he might be a good higher and be will to listen to a BCS school that needs an offensive coordinator.

A View from the North on the Iron Bowl

I consider myself to be very knowledgeable and passionate about college football, but in my wildest dreams I have never experience the passion of the game like I have this week. During the last week, I have been listening to the Paul Finebaum Radio Network for my college football talk on the way home from work and boy has it opened it my eyes to the hate in the Auburn/Alabama rivalry. For the last couple of days, the radio has been fantastic with the lunatics on both sides of the game yelling at each other.

Having a show like Finebaum's, which is based in Alabama, allows people like me to see the other side of college football and the passion that two very loyal fan basis have. The passion is fantastic, as a Rutgers season ticket holder, I wish that the Knights would have another group to fight like this. This game defines the state of Alabama and its residents. When you are born in that state you are born on a side of the rivalry. During this week on the program, people have been talking about classic Iron Bowl games, and making fun of the others teams boosters, ex-coaches, and former ADs.

The passion for the game is spelled out by former Auburn David Housel speech a bunch of years back, which I heard on Tuesday's Finebaum show.

With no pro sports in the state, this is the only thing they have and I would like to thank XM for allowing people who live in the northeast to see what the rivalry is like through Finebaum's show.
