Wildcats Running Wild

Last year, the Arkansas coaching staff developed the "Wildcat" formation, with running back Darren McFadden taking snaps at the quarterback positions. McFadden collected more then 2,000 yards and completed 7 of 9 passes for 69 yards and three touchdowns, with help of the "Wildcat" Formation.

Over the summer, a couple of other teams started to jump on the "Wildcat." Georgia Tech is using the formation with Tashard Choice and Clemson has used it with CJ Spiller and James Davis.

The best thing that the "Wildcat" Formation does is allow a team's best players to get their hands on the ball as much as possible and all of this was invented by former high school coach and current Tulsa offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn.

Malzahn introduced the concept the Arkansas last year and it took off, leave it to the a former high school coach to have a ground breaking idea.

Mike Martz loves the white guys

Every football season you can count on a couple of different things: Al Davis will do something crazy with the Raiders, the New York Giants will turn into a bunch of cry babies, and Mike Martz (above with rookie quarterback Drew Stanton) will have a white slot reciever set the league on fire. During his time as the leaders of the greatest show on turf, he had Proehl and Curtis, now with the lions he has Mike Fuerry.

There is one thing for sure, the numbers never lie.

  • Ricky Proehl, Rams, 2001: 40 catches, 563 yards, and 5 touchdowns.
  • Kevin Curtis, Rams, 2005: 60 catches, 801 yards, and 6 touchdowns.
  • Mike Fuerry, Lions, 2006: 98 catches, 1,086 yards, and 6 touchdowns. Check out his performance against the Cowboys in the final week of last season.

I'm just wondering where i can sign with the Lions and catch my 80 passes.

NCAA Football Week One: The Football Championship Sub-Division is not that bad

The Football Championship Sub-Division (formally 1-AA) is not that bad just ask Michigan, besides the Appy State historic upset at the big house, there were other story lines of note during the first weekend of the college football season.

Tailgating Professionally at Rutgers: Week One

So Rutgers first game was not the greatest in the world, but at least the tailgating was well worth the hour and a half trip.
Everyone in New Jersey loves a good traffic jam

The perfect tailgating supplies

The straws that stirs the drink was even there for the big game
When did fans start running out and buying kickers jerseys

Every great tailgating spot must have the perfect restroom facilities

I thought that I would never see a ticket scalper at a Rutgers game, let alone a game against Buffalo, but this an actually scalper.

Did you know that Rutgers, now has the same policy as the U, no weapons

Despite a terrible games, fans packed Rutgers Stadium

All year long, Joe Wolf's Vertical Jump and Endy in the Outfield will be chronicling the Rutgers Tailgating experience.

Ole, Ole, Ole, Ole, Ole

During the transfer window in 1996, the Red Devils were chasing Alan Shearer and could not get him so they turned to a blonde haired paper boy from Norway. That paper boy was Ole Gunnar Solskjær. Ole would turn out to be one of the best signings that Sir Alex made.

During that magical night in Barcelona in 1999, Ole came on as sub and capped off United dramatic comeback in the Champions League Final, capping off the Treble. During his time at United he won six league titles, two FA Cups, a League Cub, four Community Shields, and of course one Big Eared Trophy.

Earlier this week, Ole said goodbye to the pitch at the Theatre of Dreams. Ole may be gone but he will never be forgotten. Not bad for a second choice, who won more trophies then the first choice.

The Kids are going to be ok

One of the things that makes college Football so much fun is that every year the names on the back of the jerseys change. During National Signing Day, fans of teams all over the country can not help but get excited about what the future of their program is going to be. While some freshmen take a little while to make an impact other come out of the box flying. Here is a look at some of the true freshman that are going to make a huge impact in college this season.

  • Arrelious Benn (pictured above), WR, Illinois: The DC Native will give Juice Williams a great down field target to throw to. Benn shocked many people by picking Ron Zook over many other coaches. Video of him going crazy in high school.
  • Anthony Davis, OL, Rutgers: The biggest recruit in the history of the program. Announced during the High School All American game last year that he was picking the once laughing stock program over Ohio State and USC.
  • Joe McKnight, RB, USC: Like USC needed any more running back, national signing day came and this Reggie Bush clone fell in their laps. He will line up all over the field at running back, wide reciever and return kicks. Video of him making high school players look stupid.

The Ole Ball Coach is ready

While the season is fast approaching, its great to relive the first visor throw from Ole Ball Coach

Fun with the College Kids

College football is almost here and just like an after prom party I can not wait. There are so many story lines: like can Notre Dame finally be the greatest football team of all time and can Fat Charlie finally beat a team that matters. I think that we all know the answers to both of those questions is no.
Soo here is a quick look at some of the story lines for this year.

  • First Coaches to be cleaning out their office: Coach Fran at Texas A@M , Mark Mangino at Kansas and Greg Robinson at the 'Cuse.
  • Biggest Flop of the year: Oklahoma State: With Bobby Ried and a great group of offensive weapons they could score 45 points a game, but a terrible defense might give up 50 each game.
  • True Freshman that will make the biggest impact: Noel Devine at West Virginia. Once lived at Deon Sanders house and then left one night. If you have never seen him here is some video. Move over Reggie Bush.
  • Breakout Star of the Year: USC WR Patrick Turner. Has all of the skills of all of the receivers that have come before him.
  • Team to win the National Championship: That might be a little too easy, USC. The biggest question about this team is how many points are they going to going to give up this year and will its defense be as good as the Miami Defenses that dominated the early part of the decade.

Saying Goodbye to an Old Friend

For years the college football season could mean only one thing, The big Horseshoe in Little Havana. But come next year that will come to an end as U moves to their new home Dolphins Stadium.

While the Orange Bowl was not the most modern stadium it offered the U a place they could call home. From the smoke at the start of the games to the open stadium at the one end, it gave the Canes the grit and drive they would need to burst onto the college football landscape.
Over the years the U history's books are full of great memories included Orange Bowl battles with Nebraska and classic regular season games with Florida State. During their time in the broken down all building the Canes won 57 in a row at one point.

Orange Bowl you will be missed. Steward Mandel does a great story on what made the OB great.

Notre Dame's new hero is not good with the cops

Wow the top high school player in all of the land can not even get beer without causing an issue. Uber recruit Jimmy Clausen, of Super Power Notre Dame, was cited for transporting alcohol. I hope that Clausen has this type of judgement on the field.

Indiana State Excise Police cited the 19-year-old Clausen and a 23-year-old outside the Belmont Beverage store at 1621 South Bend Ave., near the Notre Dame campus, police said, according to the South Bend Tribune.
Excise police were in an unmarked car outside the store to catch minors attempting to get alcohol, said Lt. Tim Cleveland, a police spokesman.

The best part of the story is that he will have to pay a small fine and then be part of a pretrial program. I hope that Charlie Weiss paid all of the cops off with Ring Dings.

Lets not forget John Harkes

With Eddie Lewis on his way to Derby County, people all over the net are talking about best Americans to play in the greatest soccer league in the world. But one name has been left of the most list, John Harkes.
Harkes was a ground breaking player, he was the first American to play in the EPL and also score a Goal of the Year in the league. So in every ones excitement about the all of the Americans playing in the league do not forget New Jersey's own John Harkes. Without John Harkes we would not have players all over the EPL and Europe.

I hope I have children like this

The best thing about children is that you can teach them and this family has done their best. If you live Holland you either love Ajax or you love Feyenord and it's really clear with this family throws there support.

This little Feyenord fan is the greatest and as all of the European leagues kick off, we salute the littlest soccer hooligan of them all.

Fulham: The EPL Champion at one thing

While Fulham may never win the league title, one thing is sure they may have the best kit in the league this year. A retro collar is always something that hits me right in the heart. Some people would take the classic look of United or Liverpool, give me a classic collar and flip them up.

Pedro Gomez can now go home

For the last two years, Pedro Gomez has been held hostage by ESPN. Gomez has been covering the show that is Barry Bonds and no one was happier last night when Bonds hit the record breaking home run, because that means that its time for him to go home. That is if he has a home.

An American and the EPL

After a summer filled with weddings, vacation and family events its time to start one of my favorite times of the year: the start of the Barclay's English Premier League. This could be the best season ever for the great shows on earth.

Here is a look at upcoming season from a overgrown child living in New Jersey.
  • Game most likely to produce a pitch invasion: Liverpool vs. Manchester at Old Trafford. Gabby Heinze scores the winner for the Kop and then celebrates in front of the Strafford End.

  • First Player to see the paddy wagon: Lee Bowyer of West Ham, hey he once punched his own team mate.

  • Uglies Strike Force in the EPL: That is an easy one: Rooney and Scare Face.

  • How does the year end for Tony Soprano look alike Martin Jol end: I'm going to go with a Journey Song playing and him still believe that he can make the Champion League.

  • Teams headed to the Fizz Pop league: Derby (It tells you something when a player would rather stay in MLS then play for them), Birmingham (Steve Bruce still can not manage in the EPL), and Wigan (escaped last year, next year it will be Coke for all).

  • Champions: Manchester United, what did you think that I was going to pick Liverpool.

  • Teams to the Champions League: United, Chelski, Liverpool, and Arsenal.

  • UEFA Cup: Spurs, Portsmouth, and Blackburn.

Mr. Met wants you to say No

Mr. Met is on a health kick and wants fans going to Shea to know it.
At Shea Stadium there are all kinds of signs featuring the Mets' over sized head hero from telling people where to go to telling them not to smoke. Ever poll on the concourse level features a sign of Mr. Met telling people not to smoke, gotta love that.
Instead of big tobacco fearing the people at the truth.com, they should really be worried about Linda Cohen's friend.

Does Cole Hamels Really look like this?

Last night was Cole Hamels bobble head night at the Phillies game, but there was one problem with it.
It really does not look like him. The doll has eyes that only a stoner would love and a head tilt that would make Giants rookie pitcher Tim Lincecum proud.

Can we find another voice of American Soccer?

So Saturday was supposed to be the watershed day for soccer in this country, but it was far from it and that can be blamed on one person: Dave O'Brien. Yes not Beckham, but O'Brien.
During the course of the Chelski vs. LA Golden Balls game on Saturday, O'Brien was up to his old tricks that got him into the trouble during the World Cup last summer. Telling the American public about how Beckham's Manchester United teams were rivals with Chelski when he was in England. Not True. Chelski was a team that was basically Spurs before the Russian money came in and United never really considered they serious title contenders. This is just a mistake that can not happen, especially during an event like that.
Before soccer is going to grow in this country, you have to have a different voice for it. During the Champions League games Derek Rae and Tommy Smith take us through the games and everyone is happy.
So please ESPN bring a person that knews what they are talking about, you would never put a soccer announcer to call the Superbowl.

Viva La Spain

First, Boo Weekley introduces us to Redneck golf wear, then it get worst. During the third round of the Open Championship leader Sergio Garcia decided to give us a lesson on what the color of the Spanish flag were. Throw in Ian Poulter's top hat at The Masters and his retro Johnny Miller like pants at the United States open, it has not been a good year for golf fashion at the majors.

Redneck Golf Wear

Boo Weekley is taken golf wear to another level. Instead of looking like he is playing in the British Open, he looks like he is going hunting for the weekend. Augusta National is hoping that he does not wear this to their place.

Surreal Life: Sports Edition

With wrestling legend Randy Savage being named to the next season of VH1's Surreal Life cast, you can not help but wonder who make up a sports version of the house. Here are a couple of people that would make a up a great Surreal Life sports cast.
  • Eric Cantona (right): The Former Manchester United Great know for kicking a Crystal Palace fans and his crazy weird personality.
  • Anthony Young: The Former Mets Pitcher that once lost 27 consecutive games, every one of these houses needs some type of looser.
  • Barry Switzer: Every house needs a red neck that will say the wrong the things and the former Oklahoma and Cowboys head coach would fit that bill.
  • Pac Man Jones: The current bad boy of the NFL will lead the parties at the house maybe even making it rain a little.
  • Paul Shirley: Yes, I know he might be the worst player in the history of the NBA, but he has been able to make a career out of being this bad and his writing.
  • Joey Styles: I can not wait until the first time he says: "Oh My god Cantona just kung fu kick Pac Man.''

ESPN should really look into doing this, because after the Bronx is Burning is done they will actually have to show real sports and they're probably not ready for that.

There will be a lot of hair product in the LA Galaxy locker room

The LA Galaxy Locker Room is now turning into the hair product capital of the world. With the addition of David Beckham and with Abel Xavier, hair care in the city will never be the same again.
Beckham is know for all of the different styles he has had over the years.

The long style
The young Beckham look

The Hawk
The Rolls, just like A.I.s

While Abel has gone a little nuts sometimes with his hairs

Normal hair when he was youngerThe always popular hawk with rolls

Darth Visor's Greatest Hits

In eight weeks, college football stadiums will be full as college football returns and that can mean only a couple of things, Notre Dame will be over rated, Miami will make an off color CD, and Steve Spurrier will give everyone classic quotes.

Here are just a couple of the all time classics:

  • “I’m not planning on losing a whole lot. I understand it’s a possibility because there are no Vanderbilts in the NFL. But I’m not a real good loser. I don’t really want to get good at it,'' on going to the NFL to coach the Redskins.

  • “We pitched it around in the USFL. We pitched it around at Duke. We pitched it around at Florida. I came here to see if we can pitch it around in the NFL. I don’t see why we can’t,” on making the Fun and Gun work in the NFL.

  • “Can’t spell Citrus without UT, ” Spurrier said about the Vols after they failed to beat the Gators every year and ended up spending their New Years in Orlando. There is even a program to prove it.

  • ‘’You know what FSU stands for, don’t you? Free Shoes University,’’ after a couple of FSU players were charged with taking free shoes from Foot Locker.

  • "We’ve always heard rumors about them (FSU). We’ve always suspected. They’ve beaten us four out of five years in recruiting. Heck, maybe they’re the greatest recruiters in the world. But maybe there are other reasons that those guys go there. Those guys always say they feel ‘more comfortable’ going to FSU. Well, maybe we’re starting to realize what that ‘more comfortable’ means,’’ Spurrier going on about FSU.

A Bald Ronaldo or Sir Alex?

Last year it was a couple of pounds bet about goals now Sir Alex and Ronaldo have taken it the next level. Like something out of a WWE storyline, Ronaldo has given Sir Alex the bet that if he scores 20 goals during the next season the gaffer will have to shave his head, if he does not then the Player of the Year will have to. The thing about this bet is that both of them spend hours on their hour each day and either one of them bald would be funny.

Dick Vitale meet Ray Hudson

Few many loose their mind like Dick Vitale, but one man that is up there is Gol TV commentator Ray Hudson. The similarities between the two are prices less. Both were former coaches that lost their jobs, Vitale with the Detroit Pistons and Hudson with DC United and Miami Fusion of Major League Soccer.
Both have a strange man crush on a player. Vitale has his world know crush on the former Duke poster boy and GLAAD member JJ Redick, while Hudson has a crush on Boca Junior midfielder Juan Roman Riquelme.

"Genius, genius, genius. Absolutely superb strike. And look, not a smile! What makes this guy smile? I mean, come on, Roman, give us a look, give us a smile, baby. I mean, is there anything more exquisite in life than watching this man play football? Look at this! Perfection. [...] That is an orgasmic goal, Phil. We said he treats them like penalties -- that's what he does. Enjoy him while you can, enjoy him at the World Cup next year when he's wearing that beautiful blue and white's World Cup shirt for Argentina. The man is magic," Hudson say about the playmaker

Both have been know to go crazy at different times. Vitale going nuts here. Hudson loosing his mind at the end of the Spanish League not once but twice.

The New Tinker Man

Move over Claudio Ranieri, there is a new Tinker Man in the town. Over the course of the Gold Cup United States National Team manager Bob Bradley (pictured above) has been just like the successful Italian. The hell with keeping the same line ups, we are just going to keep changing it up.

  • In their first game against Guatemala Bradley sent out this line up: 1-Tim Howard - 2- Frankie Hejduk, 3- Carlos Bocanegra, 13- Jonathan Bornstein, 22- Oguchi Onyewu, 5-Benny Feilhaber (81: 12-Jay Demerit), 6- Michael Bradley, 7- DaMarcus Beasley, 8-Clint Dempsey (61: 9-Ed Johnson), 10-Landon Donovan, 20-Taylor Twellman (71: 14- Steve Ralston).
  • In his next game against T&T, he totally changed things up: 18 – Kasey Keller (GK) (capt.), 5-Benny Feilhaber (46’: 10 – Landon Donovan), 9 – Eddie Johnson (72’: 20 – Taylor Twellman), 11 – Brian Ching (65’: 6 - Michael Bradley), 12 – Jay Demerit, 14 – Steve Ralston, 15 – Frank Simek, 16 – Michael Parkhurst, 17 – Jonathan Spector, 19 – Ricardo Clark, 21 – Justin Mapp.
  • In the final group game, Bradley changed things up against El Salvador: 1-Tim Howard - 4-Pablo Mastroeni, 5-Benny Feilhaber, 6-Michael Bradley (64: 11-Brian Ching), 7-DaMarcus Beasley, 8-Clint Dempsey, 10-Landon Donovan-C (46: 20-Taylor Twellman), 13-Jonathan Bornstein, 16-Michael Parkhurst, 17-Jonathan Spector (81: 15-Frank Simek), 22-Oguchi Onyewu.
  • Then its the knock out stages against Panama and her puts out a different group: - 1.Tim Howard; 2- Frankie Hejduk, 22-Oguchi Onyewu, 3-Carlos Bocanegra (capt.), 13-Jonathan Bornstein; 6-Michael Bradley, 4-Pablo Mastroeni, 10-Landon Donovan (19-Ricardo Clark, 89), 7-DaMarcus Beasley; 20-Taylor Twellman (14-Steve Ralston, 71), 8-Clint Dempsey (11-Brian Ching, 84)
  • Against Canada it was a totally different line up again: 18-Kasey Keller (capt.); 2- Frankie Hejduk, 22-Oguchi Onyewu, 3-Carlos Bocanegra, 13-Jonathan Bornstein; 6-Michael Bradley, 4-Pablo Mastroeni (19-Ricardo Clark, 89), 10-Landon Donovan, 7-DaMarcus Beasley; 9-Eddie Johnson (5-Benny Feilhaber, 80), 8-Clint Dempsey (20-Taylor Twellman, 88).
I understand with Copa America starting next week their is a need to play type of different players, but this is getting nuts.

Team Building Hurts

Redskins safety LaRon Landry wanted to part of the team so bad he hurt himself. During a team building paintball trip he hurt his groin, and missed part of the his first mini camp. That has to rank up there with Jeff Kent breaking his wrist while washing his car.

Bring me the Devil

Just when you thought United were done in the transfer marked, now they are moving in for the biggest fish out there, Carlos Tevez. Reports all over the United Kingdom are saying that a deal for the player, that kept West Ham United in the EPL, are close to being finished up. Adding the Devil to the Anderson, Nani, and Hargreaves would almost secure the title for next year and maybe the big eared cup too.
I just have one question where have all of Liverpool's signings been, I thought that their American owners were going to open the check book. So how long is it until Rafa says he wants to leave again.

Money Talks

So maybe I was wrong and the Nationals are committed to winning.
The Nationals showed commitment duing this weeks Major League Baseball Draft. Instead of taking guys that were considered easy signs, the Nationals rolled the dice on a couple of top high school pitchers that were considered tough signs: LHP Jack McGeary (above), Massachusetts and LHP Josh Smoker (below), Georgia.
Right now with the Nats set up the way they are, they are not going to be able to go out and spend all kinds of money on a front of the rotation guy, but it appears that Jim Bowden and the rest of the staff has been given the money to spend on highly rated draft picks. With both McGeary and Smoker the Nats will have to buy them out of the their college commitments: McGeary to Stanford and Smoker to Clemson. It will take at least a cool million to get them signed, but you have to think that these Bowden will be given the money to get these deals done. If both of them pan out, it would give the Nats two good left handers at the top of the rotation and as everyone knows, the Nats need pitching.

Overall, this draft appears to have set down the grown work for the Nats to work their way back to respectability.

Paging Brien Taylor and Todd Van Popple

As a baseball fan of team that is terrible, the draft and the Futures Game are one of the only things to get excited about. After reading a mock draft on MLB.com, I suddenly was not looking forward to finding the next Ryan Zimmerman or Chad Cordero. I felt like we would be looking for the next BJ Wallace instead.
One of the people that the Nationals are looking at is Phillipe Aumont, he is from Quebec, yes Canada. There are great baseball players all over the the college game like Todd Frazier, Matt Wieters, and Casey Weathers, why would the Nationals take a guy with a hockey name, easy cause it cheaper to pay a guy from Quebec.
