- Dr No Roy Halladay's no-hitter against the Reds in Game 1 of the National League Division Series. It was the first baseball playoff game that I had every been to and boy did it work out well
- Strasmas in Philly: As a Nats fan it might be the highlight of the baseball year, seeing Strasburg in person, little did I know that it would be the final time that he pitched all season and maybe next.
- Glory, Glory, Glory Man. United: Manchester United visited Philadelphia to take on the Union this year and of course we where there. It was great to see Berba in person and if all goes well I got to see the Premier League Champions before the season even kicked off.
- Don't Tread on Me: There is nothing better then seeing your national soccer especially if its their last game before they head over to the World Cup. Singing the National Anthem that day is something that I will never forget.
- MLS Here We Come: First trip to the new Red Bull Arena, simply amazing. A world class facility.
- Doctor is in the House: First time seeing Roy Halladay pitch in person, as per most of the season, he was simply fantastic.
- Rutgers Spring Game: It was the first game for the Little Guy. It could be the day that he falls in love with football.
- The Legend of Chas Dodd Grows: It was my first time at the New Meadowlands Stadium and boy was I not impressed.
- Eli Learns how to slide again: First time seeing a Eagles/Giants game in person and we learned again that Eli still has no idea how to slide.

Ok Enough is Enough
Against the Giants, Jackson made on of the most memorable plays in Eagles history with his punt return, but against the Vikings, Jackson's faults as a receiver came to light. For all of his talents Jackson is not a big time receiver, he is a big time play makers and there is a huge difference between the two. During the Vikings game, Jackson failed to get across the defensive backs several times almost leading to several interceptions. Another thing that became clearer during the game was when Mike Vick started to get flushed from the pocket Jackson never worked his way back to the Vick, like you are taught to do when your quarterback takes off. At one point during the game, Vick was talking to the Jackson and being really animated, I could only guess it was about the same issue.
Something is also becoming clear, when Vick needs to convert a big third down he looks for one man and its not DJ10, its Jeremy Maclin and the reason is simple. Maclin might be on the best route runners in the leagues and always gives Vick a good target to throw and the yardage that is needed.
Maybe over the next couple of years Maclin can teach DJ how to be come a big time receiver and not just a big time play maker.I know some people will never say anything bad about DJ, because of his play making ability, but the time has come for him to develop into the player that everyone thinks that he can be.

It's Official
Something is missing
When the NHL decided to go with a salary cap a bunch of years ago it had a huge impact on the World Junior Championships. Now when an under 20-year player can play at a NHL level, they are put on a NHL roster because they have a low entry level salary that works with the cap. In the past no matter the skill level, playing the WJC was part of a players development. Its like two different views of player development.
Just look at the rosters of the United States and Canada. In the past players like Tyler Seguin of Canada and Cam Fowler of the United States would be playing in tournament but now they are playing minor minutes in the NHL. While the quality of the players has dropped a bit, the passion and love of the tournament has not.

Rutgers biggest recruit
rather a coach. Over the weekend Rutgers hired Jeff Hafley to its staff in a roll that has yet to be determined, I know what people are thinking wow big deal another assistant. Hafley is more then an assistant. During the last couple of years at Pitt, Hafley has been the one that keeps coming into New Jersey and getting kids to play at Pittsburgh.
Hafley, who has built a reputation as a relentless recruiter in North Jersey, does not have a defined role yet on the staff. He was an assistant for the Panthers the past five years, serving as secondary coach the past three.
"He's the biggest recruit of the off-season for Rutgers," John Otterstedt of ScarletNation.com told Star Ledger. "He is responsible for most of the New Jersey guys going to Pittsburgh the past few years. In North Jersey he's unstoppable as a recruiter,"
It might no show in this class, but in the future it will. Over the course of the last couple of years, some of the top players in the state have gotten away, here is hoping that Hafley changes all of that and more of the Garden State top players come and play at the State University of New Jersey.

Snoods on the Run
photo from the Daily Mail |
This season, a number of high profile international players were seen to be wearing tubular neck scarves referred to as snoods, and subsequently there was a rise in popularity in the wider population as people emulated their idols. This apparent new fashion was much derided by commentators, prompting one journalist to state that 'Snoods are the new gloves' in professional football, according to wikipedia.
Around England, many old school managers like Blackpool's Ian Holloway have shot back at the fashion trend.
While stars on Manchester City and Arsenal have been sporting the neck wear, Manchester United old school Scot Sir Alex has taken a hard line view on the terrible fashion. Sir Alex has told players that they are not allowed to wear them. Rio Ferdinand tweeted recently: "A lot of hostility from other teams' fans... I don't care if your players do or don't wear snoods. I just said WE won't be, so pipe down!''
Arsenal Manager Arsene Wenger said he allows his players to wear the much talked about neck wear for medical reasons. "I get advice from the medical team,” said the manager told Arsenal.com. “We had some players with neck problems before the Aston Villa game, Nasri and Chamakh. That’s why we decided to let them wear them because they had some medical issues.” It really does not surprise me that he would support the practice, he has always been like that.
I'm all for people trying to stay warm while playing gloves, Under Armour that is fine, but come on these thing look terrible and makes me question their fashion. So come on tough it out, and leave the snoods for your night life.

Twitter got me
After hearing the news, I got on the phone and called or texted several other baseball fans about the issue and none of them had heard anything about it, which was weird because both friends have a good idea of what is going on. After a couple of minutes, I checked twitter again and people started posting it was all a hoax and the Phillies were not involved in anything involving the Royals.
People talk about twitter being the future of journalism but sometimes even the future of something can get a person in trouble. While twitter is great it will cause some issues and this situation shows it.

Never Saw This Coming
Jayson Werth signed with the Washington Nationals, the twitter post said. I could not believe it Werth signing with my Washington Nationals. Its hard to believe still. I for one still don't get it. The Nationals gave Werth seven years and $126 million. Those a franchise player type numbers, but here is my question, is Werth a franchise player. I tend to say no. With the Phillies, Werth was surrounded with star players from Howard to Utley to Rollins. So the offensive expectations where not as high as other members of the lineup. Werth has never been a 100 RBI player, the closest he came was in 2009 when he had 99. Now with the Nationals he is going to be counted on to provide power to a very limited offense. One of the few positives of this deals is that the Nats can keep their first round draft pick, traditionally teams are given a the first round pick of the team that signs a player. Since the Nats is a top 10 its protected.
While I'm happy the Nationals have spent some money in free agency, I wish that they would have have taken that money and spent it in other areas. One thing that I would have loved to seen the National do was resign Adam Dunn and try to get AJ Burnett from the Yankees. That would have improved the team and also cost about the same. Sometime make a big splash is not the way to improve your team and with the Nationals that might be the case.

Under Armour's Big Day

The future is now for some
On Wednesday, I watched United play Rangers in the Champions League and came away very impressed with Rangers six foot two inch 19 year old midfielder Kyle Hutton. Despite being the youngest player on the field, he played with a calmness that is shown only by older players. The Scottish midfielder is going to continue to grow and has the potential to be one of the best midfielders around.
Then on Saturday, I watched the Arsenal Aston Villa game and loved what I saw from Ciaran Clark (picture above) and also came away impressed. During the game Clark scored Villa only two goals in the 4-2 loss. Clark, who stands six foot two inches tall, is a commanding presence in the middle of the field to go along with the smallish Barry Bannan. The duo is going to team up for the next couple of years to give Villains face something to cheer about. Clark has played at various levels for England but has recently committed to play for Ireland at senior level. Clark has all of the tools to be a great box to box midfielder in the Premier League.
Both Clark and Hutton are tall figures and show that playing midfield is no longer a small man's game.

Time For a Change
One guy who caught my eye was Bowling Green offensive coordinator and quarterback coach Warren Ruggerio. In 2009, Falcon offense he led a unit that ranked first in the MAC and sixth nationally in passing yards per game (316.2). Standout quarterback Tyler Sheehan finished the year completing 373 of 575 passes for 4,051 yards and 27 touchdowns, all career-bests under the guidance of Ruggiero. In fact, his 4,051 passing yards were only the second time in BGSU's 90-year history that a Falcon quarterback had surpassed the 4,000 yard plateau. In addition to working at Bowling Green, Ruggerio also helped tutor Tampa Bay Bucs quarterback Josh Freeman while he was at Kansas State. This year has not been the best for Bowling Green but that is not been because of Ruggerio but rather rather a lack of talent. While Ruggerio might not be the sexist pick for the job, he might be a good higher and be will to listen to a BCS school that needs an offensive coordinator.

A View from the North on the Iron Bowl
Having a show like Finebaum's, which is based in Alabama, allows people like me to see the other side of college football and the passion that two very loyal fan basis have. The passion is fantastic, as a Rutgers season ticket holder, I wish that the Knights would have another group to fight like this. This game defines the state of Alabama and its residents. When you are born in that state you are born on a side of the rivalry. During this week on the program, people have been talking about classic Iron Bowl games, and making fun of the others teams boosters, ex-coaches, and former ADs.
The passion for the game is spelled out by former Auburn David Housel speech a bunch of years back, which I heard on Tuesday's Finebaum show.
With no pro sports in the state, this is the only thing they have and I would like to thank XM for allowing people who live in the northeast to see what the rivalry is like through Finebaum's show.

The only problem is that Paul Maguire is doing UFL so he may not be available to save the day.

The Passion of the South
Today all of the hate appeared to be directed at ESPN Joe Schad who reported that Newton and his father talked about a pay to play scenario during his recruitment. One caller said that he wanted to get a group of friends together and go ""Schad hunting'' and when they found him they were going to break his jaw.
Schad is not the only ESPN reporter feeling the heat from Auburn fans, it has gotten so bad for Mark Schlabach that he has had to get security at his home, Finebaum said during his show today. Schlabach was also heckled by Auburn fans when he was trying to do a live report from the Plains last weekend. People said that he was a "disgrace to journalism."
Ok, I know a fan never wants to see his or her school get in trouble, but this is getting out of hand. Schad and Schlabach are just doing their job. Its not their fault that something illegal may have happened during Newton recruiting. Reporters being threatened on the radio and having to get security shows how nuts people can get about sports. For years we talked about how terrible European soccer fans where, this just shows that some SEC fans are just as bad.

William Paterson might need a QB
After having a great year in JC, Simms signed with then University of Tennessee head coach Lane Kiffan. Reports out of the great state of Tennessee, stated that Simms was chosen over fellow JC QB Cam Newton, that turned out well. During this season Simms has not been that good and has now lost his job to true freshman Tyler Bray. Simms did not take too kindly to being replaced during the South Carolina game a couple of weeks ago: "I had no idea that I was going to get taken out of the game for that. I was playing really well. Extremely well. Probably the best game I've played all year. It's rough but hey, they made a decision and they stuck with it," according to USA Today. Bray ended up starting last week against Memphis and appears to be headed for a long run as the UT starting qb.
So after all that hype at Bosco, Simms looks like a player without a starting job. As a alumni of William Paterson University, I think that Simms would look good in the orange and black. There are many positives to him heading there, he will not have to sit out next year because its a Division III program and its really close to his home town as Rampo. Hey nothing else has worked out for Simms, so why not head back toward home.

TNT will never let Trailblazer fans forget
During the game, I hit the info button to see what it said and boy did it rub it in Blazers fans face. Durant has played 200 something games while Oden has yet to hit a 100. Its not like Blazer fans don't know the difference between the two players but to make it the info graph is just not right.

We stole Nate Allen
In the deal the Eagles got a second round pick they used on safety Nate Allen. So far that is starting to look like a steal. Maybe the skins gave up way to much for Mc5, instead of second rounder it should have more like a six or fifth rounder. Oh second guessing is a ton of fun and oh so true.

The Great UGA Lindsey Scott call in video game form
I got the chance to meet Mr. Munson about 10 years ago, when my wife and I went down to visit our friend at UGA and Mr. Munson was signing poster and he was a very pleasant southern man and a joy to meet. Rivals Radio's Bill King called him the best radio play by play guy that lived and I could not agree more.
